On 26th May, 1916, the 13th King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 111 Brigade, 37th Division, were relieved from the trenches near Bailleuval, a few miles to the south-west of Arras and moved back to billets at Berles. On the night of 28th May the battalion provided a large working party of over 500 to dig trenches close to the front line. Shortly after the work began, the work party, which was scattered over a wide area, were shelled and 8 of them were killed and another 24 wounded. Albert Etherington was one of these casualties. |
